On Wednesday 23 September, the Royal Canadian Air Force began its transformation to become a 5th Gen fighter force with the first flight of the CF-35 at the Lockheed Martin factory in Fort Worth, Texas. Many, many years in the making, the revolutionary capabilities of the F-35 will soon be in the hands of Canadian fighter pilots. And the rest of the RCAF must change to adapt to this powerful, lethal and survivable platform.
To come is Canada’s participation in the 6th Gen GCAP team and the opportunities for Canadian industry and tech to support development of that platform.
And Collaborative Combat Aircraft development and integration into the RCAF. Fighter size, supersonic, stealth drones controlled by 5th Gen fighter pilots bringing combat mass to our defensive and offensive capabilities. Canadian industry has a very real play in CCA design, testing and implementation.
Moving aggressively forward now with 5th Gen instead of regressing to invest in the ‘leading edge of trailing tech’ as many in the 3Ps (Press, politicians, public) wished for.
I recognize the low key media coverage but history will show just how momentous this occasion really is.
